History Behind Midway Road Church Of Christ

Picture
On December 1921 the George Hipp family while visiting Fort Pierce found no congregation with which to worship.  Therefore, at that time they held services each Sunday in the home of Sister Bowers. George Hipp returned in the winter of 1922-23 and rented the Woodman Hall (no longer standing) to worship in. The Church continued to worship at this location until 1926 when a hurricane damaged the building.  The Church then relocated to the old Arcade Building located  at the corners of Fourth Street, Orange Avenue and Avenue A. In late 1928 Brother Bowers donated a lot on 15th Street and the Church purchased the adjoining lot on the corner of Orange Avenue. The first permanent structure owned by the Church was located here when the congregation built a 25-foot by 36-foot building in the fall of 1929.The congregation became known as the Orange Avenue Church of Christ.
Shortly thereafter, the first full time preacher, R.A. Zahn, was hired. He preached from 1931 to 1933. The Church continued to grow over the next 25 years.  At this time there were approximately 94 members.
In 1954 a new building was erected across Orange Avenue, south of the original building.  The new building would seat 200 people and there were 7 large classrooms.
